Safe as Houses is a not-for-profit venture aiming to reduce the risk of fires both starting and spreading in social housing.
We believe that everyone, whether they live in a high rise, housing block or converted house, should be safe in their homes.
01 / WHY
How many of us really understand the purpose of fire safety features? Do we know how things are supposed to work? The Grenfell fires has left us without confidence in authorities. It's time we took control and made sure this can never happen again.
02 / WHAT
Our free app, available for IoS and Android phones, will show you what good fire safety looks like so that you can tell the difference between a safe environment and a dangerous one.
03 / HOW
Using the app you will audit the block you live in and create a report for your landlord with images and evidence of issues that need fixing. And you can audit your own home too, checking for fire risks from your appliances, cables and electronic devices.
Phil Murphy is a former Firefighter, Fire Safety Officer (GMFRS) and Building Compliance Manager. He runs Manchester Sustainable Communities, a social enterprise that assists not-for profit organisations with issues relating to H&S (Nebosh certified), Building Management (Dip) and Fire Safety (Tech Eng IFE, FSO).
Cathy Long lives in North Kensington and has been working on community resilience projects since the Grenfell fire. Her background is in the safety of football matches. She is working on a Knowledge Exchange research project funded by the London School of Economics as part of its mission to use research for the public good. This research aims to learn lessons for future disaster recovery efforts from the experience of community volunteers and organisations around Grenfell Tower. She has managed numerous digital projects including the Get In app for the Premier League.
We share a passion for ensuring safety in social housing and we are working together to create a tool that will help to keep people safe and prevent future disasters.
Our app will put residents in control of their own fire safety. Grenfell and other high rise fires have shown us that we should not rely on authorities. Our reporting tool will ensure that residents are more aware of fire safety issues and ensure that they are not ignored when they raise concerns.
No one should feel unsafe in their own homes. Those in public housing should be at least as safe as those of us in houses.
Ultimately, Safe as Houses will reduce the risk of fires both starting and spreading.
